RTP and max win in the Starlight games

Two numbers decide what a slot can do: how much it returns over time, and how much one round can pay. Here are both for all five Starlight Princess games, straight from their rules screens, with what they mean for a real session.

What RTP means, and what it doesn't

RTP, return to player, is the share of all money staked that a game pays back over a very long run. At 96.50%, players as a whole get back $96.50 of every $100 staked; the other $3.50 is the house's share. It is calculated by the game's maker over millions of simulated rounds and certified by test labs.

It says nothing about your next session. Our test of 1,000 spins per game returned anywhere from 34% to 229% of the money staked, all from games with RTPs above 96%. The fewer spins you play, the less RTP tells you.

What RTP is good for is comparison. A version at 96.50% returns more over time than the same game at a lower setting, and the difference adds up for anyone who plays often.

Check the RTP at your casino

Pragmatic Play lets casinos choose between several RTP settings for many of its games. The figures above are the ones in the official demo. To see the one you are playing, open the game, press the i button and page through the rules until you reach the line "The theoretical RTP of this game is…". If it is lower than in the table, you are playing a lower setting.

Max win and how rare it is

Maximum win per round and the chance the rules give for reaching it
GameMax winChance per spinAt 600 spins an hour
Starlight Princess5,000x1 in 697,350about 1,160 hours
Starlight Christmas5,000x1 in 697,350about 1,160 hours
Starlight Princess Pachi5,000x1 in 870,625about 1,450 hours
Starlight Princess 100015,000x1 in 2,749,771about 4,580 hours
Starlight Princess Super Scatter50,000x1 in 666,666,667about 1.1 million hours

The "chance per spin" is the figure printed on each game's rules screen. The hours column only puts it into human terms: someone spinning non-stop at 600 spins an hour would wait, on average, that long for one max win. It isn't a schedule, and the next spin is never "closer" to it than the last.

How the cap works

Every Starlight game stops a round as soon as its win reaches the cap. The win is paid up to the cap and any free spins still to come are forfeited. The cap is written in multiples of the bet, so it scales with your stake: 5,000x is $1,000 at a $0.20 bet and $5,000 at $1.

With the ante bet on, the rules quote the cap against the bigger ante stake: 4,000x in the original and Christmas, 12,000x in the 1000 version and 33,334x in Super Scatter. Multiply back by the ante's 1.25 or 1.5 and you get the same 5,000x, 15,000x or 50,000x of your base bet.

In Super Scatter the ante also changes the odds of the very top: 1 in 294,117,647 instead of 1 in 666,666,667, because it puts more super scatters on the reels.

Volatility, by the games' own labels

Each game shows a volatility meter on its intro and rules screens. Starlight Princess, Starlight Christmas and Super Scatter say medium; Starlight Princess 1000 and Pachi say high. Volatility describes how the RTP is spread out: a high-volatility game pays more of its return through rare big rounds, so dry spells last longer. Medium is relative, though: in our test, seven spins in ten paid nothing even in the medium games.

Questions

Which Starlight Princess game has the highest RTP?

Super Scatter with the ante bet on, at 96.55%. Most other modes of the 6×5 games are at 96.50%; Pachi is lowest at 96.04%.

Does buying the bonus lower the RTP?

Barely, if at all: 96.50% in the original and Christmas, 96.49% in the 1000 version and for the Super Free Spins buy in Super Scatter.

Why does my casino show a different RTP?

Pragmatic Play offers casinos several RTP settings. The rules screen inside the game always shows the setting you are playing.

Has anyone hit the max win?

The rules give the odds, 1 in 697,350 spins for the original, and with enough players someone does. Any single player should treat it as a long shot, not a goal.
